1. 한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK, 총무 김종생 목사, 이하 교회협)는 현 비상시국을 마주하며 비통한 심정으로 우리나라의 민주주의 회복을 위해 기도하고 있습니다.
우리는 지난 3월 11일 전광훈 씨가 종로구 안국역 5번 출구 앞에서 열린 집회에서 “윤 대통령에게 가장 큰 영향을 미친 것은 트럼프”라며 윤석열 대통령의 12.3 비상계엄 선포에 미국 도널드 트럼프 대통령이 관여했다고 주장한 사실에 경악을 금치 못했습니다. 이에 우리는 명확한 사실 확인과 미국 사회 내 한국의 12.3 내란 사태에 관한 바른 인식 공유를 위해 우리의 미국측 파트너인 미국그리스도교협의회(National Council of Churches of Chirst in the USA, 이하 NCCCUSA) 총무 배스티 멀피 멕켄지 주교에게 연대 요청문을 발송하였습니다.
2. 우리는 요청문을 통해 윤석열 대통령의 탄핵심판이 진행되는 가운데, 극우 정치 세력과 일부 개신교 집단이 ‘부정선거 의혹’을 지속적으로 제기하며 사회적 혼란을 부추기고 있는 점에 깊은 우려를 표하였습니다. 특히 극우 개신교의 핵심 인물인 전광훈 씨가 “윤 대통령이 계엄령을 선포한 것은 트럼프 때문이다”라는 주장이 허위 발언을 넘어 한국사회를 극단적으로 분열시키고 헌정질서를 무너뜨리는 위험한 행태라는 점을 지적하였습니다.
이러한 극우적 선동이 국제적으로 확산되는 것은 한국 뿐 아니라 미국 사회 내에서도 심각한 우려를 불러일으킬 뿐만 아니라, 민주주의의 보편적 가치에 대한 도전이자 국제적 민주주의 질서를 훼손할 가능성이 크다는 점, 그리고 극우 세력의 선동이 지속된다면, 이는 한국뿐만 아니라 미국 내 민주적 가치에도 부정적 영향을 미칠 것이며, 더욱이 한국 사회를 불안정하게 만들려는 세력에게 정당성을 부여하는 결과를 초래할 수 있다는 점을 강력히 지적하였습니다.
3. 이에 우리는 우리의 미국 측 해외파트너인 미국그리스도교교회협의회(NCCCUSA)에 해당 내용을 공유하며, 1) 미국정부가 한국의 민주주의와 관련된 최근 상황에 대해 어떤 방식으로든 영향을 미친 바가 있는지 명확히 밝혀주기 바라며 2) 전광훈을 비롯한 극우 세력이 본인들의 정치적 목적을 위해 확인되지 않은 주장과 왜곡된 정보를 확산시켜 한국과 미국 사회에 불필요한 오해와 혼란을 초래하는 일이 없도록 조치해 줄 것 그리고 마지막으로 미국의 교회와 에큐메니칼 공동체가 한반도 화해와 평화를 위해 오랜 시간 연대해 온 것과 같이, 최근 내란사태와 관련하여 한국의 민주주의와 평화를 수호하는 일에 적극적으로 동참해 줄 것을 요청하였습니다.

대한민국 민주주의와 헌정질서 회복을 위한 미국 교회의 연대 요청문
존경하는 미국그리스도교교회협의회(NCCCUSA) 총무 베스티 멀피 맥켄지 주교님께,
평화와 연대의 인사를 전합니다.
대한민국은 지금 민주주의와 헌정질서를 위협하는 심각한 위기에 직면해 있습니다. 윤석열 대통령의 탄핵 심판이 진행되는 가운데, 극우 정치 세력과 일부 개신교 집단이 ‘부정선거 의혹’을 지속적으로 제기하며 사회적 혼란을 부추기고 있습니다. 특히, 극우 개신교의 핵심적 인물인 전광훈 씨는 지난 3월 11일 극우 집회에서 “윤 대통령이 계엄령을 선포한 것은 트럼프 때문이다”라는 주장을 펼쳤습니다. 이는 단순한 허위 발언을 넘어, 한국 사회를 극단적으로 분열시키고 헌정질서를 무너뜨리는 위험한 행태입니다.
이러한 극우적 선동이 국제적으로 확산되는 가운데, 최근 미국 내 보수 성향의 정치 행사에서 한국의 극우 세력과 연계된 단체들이 부스를 운영하며 자신들의 주장을 적극 홍보하는 활동을 벌였습니다. 이들은 별도의 발표 행사를 열어 특정 정치적 의제를 강조하고, 한국 내 극우적 내러티브를 미국 사회에서도 확산하려 했습니다. 특히, 한국의 민주적 절차를 부정하는 주장을 미국 내 보수 진영과 결합하려는 시도가 이루어졌으며, 이는 한국뿐만 아니라 미국 사회 내에서도 심각한 우려를 불러일으키고 있습니다.
이러한 국제적 극우 연대는 단순히 한국의 문제가 아니라, 민주주의의 보편적 가치에 대한 도전이자 국제적 민주주의 질서를 훼손할 가능성이 크기에, 미국 정부의 명확한 입장 표명이 필요합니다. 극우 세력의 선동이 지속된다면, 이는 한국뿐만 아니라 미국 내 민주적 가치에도 부정적 영향을 미칠 것이며, 더욱이 한국 사회를 불안정하게 만들려는 세력에게 정당성을 부여하는 결과를 초래할 수 있습니다.
우리는 미국 정부가 한국의 민주주의와 관련된 최근 상황에 대해 어떤 방식으로든 영향을 미친 바가 있는지 명확히 밝혀 주기를 바라며, 전광훈을 비롯한 극우 세력이 본인들의 정치적 목적을 위해 확인되지 않은 주장과 왜곡된 정보를 확산시켜 한국과 미국 사회에 불필요한 오해와 혼란을 초래하는 일이 없도록 조치를 취해 주기를 바랍니다.
NCCK는 지난 3월 7일 독일 공영방송 ARD와 ZDF의 왜곡된 다큐멘터리에 대해 한국의 민주주의를 위협하는 서사를 바로잡기 위한 입장문을 발표하고, 독일개신교교회협의회(EKD)에 이를 전달하였습니다. 이 과정에서 독일 사회 내 양심적 시민들과 한국의 종교·시민사회가 함께 항의의 목소리를 내었으며, 결국 해당 방송국은 해당 다큐멘터리의 방영을 취소하고 보도의 오류를 인정하였습니다. 이는 국제 사회에서 민주주의를 왜곡하는 잘못된 내러티브에 대해 책임 있는 대응이 이루어질 수 있음을 보여주는 중요한 사례입니다. 우리는 독일의 파트너들과 협력하여 편향된 보도를 바로잡고, 극우 정치·종교 세력의 결탁이 어떻게 민주주의를 훼손하는지에 대한 정확한 이해를 공유하기 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 이와 마찬가지로, 미국의 교회와 에큐메니칼 공동체 또한 한국의 민주주의와 평화를 수호하는 일에 함께해 주시기를 간곡히 요청드립니다.
특히, 우리는 NCCCUSA가 미국 정부로부터 명확한 입장을 확인하고, 이 사안에 대한 공식적인 답변을 받을 수 있도록 협조해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 한국 사회가 극우적 정치 선동과 종교적 왜곡 속에서 분열과 혼란을 겪고 있는 지금, 우리는 그리스도인으로서 이 갈등을 극복하고, 한반도의 화해와 평화를 위한 역할을 감당해야 하는 막중한 책임을 느낍니다. 더욱이, 반공과 반동성애를 앞세운 반민주적 담론이 강화되는 상황에서, 한반도 평화와 민주주의의 미래는 더욱 위태로운 갈림길에 서 있습니다.
이러한 혼란 속에서 정의와 평화의 가치를 소중히 여기는 NCCCUSA 회원 교단 및 미국 에큐메니칼 공동체의 지혜와 협력이 절실합니다. 우리는 그리스도인이라고 자처하는 이들이 갈등과 분열, 증오와 폭력을 조장하는 우리는 참담한 현실을 깊이 성찰하며, 미국의 에큐메니칼 동역자들이 이 문제에 깊이 관심을 가지고, 한국의 민주주의와 헌정질서 회복을 위해 지속적으로 연대해 주시기를 요청드립니다. 우리가 함께하는 정의와 평화, 생명의 순례 속에서, 민주주의를 지키기 위한 국제적 연대가 더욱 굳건해지기를 바랍니다.

Request for Solidarity from the U.S. Churches for the Restoration of Democracy and Constitutional Order in South Korea
Grace and peace to you in the spirit of solidarity.
South Korea is currently facing a grave crisis that threatens our democracy and constitutional order. As the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol proceeds, far-right political groups and certain religious factions continue to fuel social unrest by perpetuating allegations of “election fraud.” Notably, a chief agitator of the far-right Christian extremist faction, Jeon Kwang-hoon, declared at an extremist rally on March 11 that “President Yoon declared martial law because of Trump.” This statement is not merely an unfounded claim; it is a dangerous provocation that deepens division and undermines democratic governance.
Amid this turmoil, we are witnessing a troubling expansion of these far-right narratives beyond South Korea. Recently, at a major conservative political gathering in the United States, groups linked to South Korea’s far-right established booths to promote their claims and held a separate event to amplify their ideological agenda. These efforts included attempts to connect anti-democratic narratives from South Korea with segments of the U.S. conservative movement. Such efforts not only distort the realities of South Korea but also pose a broader threat to democratic values internationally.
This transnational far-right alliance is not merely a domestic issue for South Korea; it is a direct challenge to the universal values of democracy and a potential disruption to international democratic norms. If unchecked, these movements will continue to undermine democratic principles in both South Korea and the United States, legitimizing forces that seek to destabilize our societies.
We urge the U.S. government to clarify whether it has, in any way, played a role in the current democratic crisis unfolding in South Korea. Furthermore, we call for clear measures to prevent far-right groups from deliberately spreading misinformation and politically motivated falsehoods that create unnecessary division and confusion in both of our societies. It is crucial that we collectively work to counter these efforts with truth and integrity.
On March 7, NCCK issued a statement addressing the biased narrative in a documentary produced by German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, which misrepresented the democratic situation in South Korea. In response to widespread protests from conscientious citizens in Germany, as well as voices from South Korea’s religious and civil society, the broadcasters ultimately canceled the airing of the program and acknowledged their misrepresentation. This case serves as a powerful reminder that coordinated efforts can hold media institutions accountable and prevent the distortion of democracy. In that same spirit, we ask our ecumenical partners in the U.S. to stand with us in ensuring that misinformation does not take root in the global discourse on South Korea’s democratic struggle.
We particularly request that NCCCUSA engage in efforts to obtain a clear response from the U.S. government regarding this matter. At this critical juncture, as South Korea faces a surge of extremist political rhetoric and the exploitation of religion for divisive agendas, we as Christians must recommit ourselves to justice, reconciliation, and peace. The growing use of anti-communist and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric as tools of political manipulation further endangers the future of democracy and peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In these uncertain times, the wisdom and solidarity of NCCCUSA member churches and the broader ecumenical community in the United States are more vital than ever. We are deeply troubled by the fact that those who claim to be followers of Christ are instead fostering division, hatred, and violence. As we reflect on this painful reality, we reaffirm the urgent need for our churches in the U.S. and South Korea to work together to reclaim the Christian values of reconciliation, love, nonviolence, and peace. Now more than ever, our shared commitment to the pilgrimage of justice and peace must remain steadfast, and our collective voice in defending democracy must be resolute.
