한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK, 총무 이홍정 목사)의 국제위원회(위원장 서호석 목사)는 최근 미국에서 일어난 “경찰의 과잉 폭력에 의해 살해된 흑인 남성 조지 플로이드 사태”에 대해 애도하며, 미국그리스도교교회협의회(NCCCUSA)에 연대서신을 발송하였습니다.

짐 윙클러 회장님께,
우리의 소망이시고 평화이신 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 문안드립니다.
경찰의 과잉 폭력에 의해 살해당한 흑인 남성 조지 플로이드(George Floyd) 사태로 미국 사회가 다시금 큰 위기를 맞이하고 있는 이 때, 한국교회를 대신하여 마음과 기도를 담아 이 서신을 보냅니다. 우리는 어떤 부류의 사람들을 마치 불필요한 존재인 것처럼 대하는 국가나 사회제도에 대해 좌절과 분노를 느껴 왔습니다. 우리는 또한 인간의 생명이 존귀하게 여겨지고 있는지도 늘 반문하고 있습니다. 우리는 "인종차별과 편견이 경찰력과 함께 결합되면 이는 흑인들에게 치명적인 결과를 낳는다.”는 미국교회의 경고에 공감하며 깊이 애도합니다.
아울러 우리는 이러한 위기 앞에서 마틴 루터 킹 목사의 "주목을 받기 위해 폭력적인 반란을 일으키는 것 외에는 다른 대안이 없다고 느끼는 개인들이 있고, 폭동은 소외되고 목소리 없는 이들의 언어라는 점을 말해 둡니다. 그리고 미국이 듣지 못하고 있는 것은 무엇입니까?" 라는 말씀을 다시금 깊이 성찰합니다.
우리는 미국 교회와 함께 기도하면서, 국가권력과 제도가 모든 사람들의 생명과 존엄을 소중하게 여기고 지킬 수 있도록 개혁하는 일에 함께 연대하겠습니다. 우리는 미국과 한국 사회가 어느 한민족 또는 한 인종을 다른 민족, 인종보다 더 문명적이고 지적이며, 존엄성을 가진 것처럼 간주하는 편견과 차별의 종식을 위해 끝까지 노력할 것입니다.
우리는 하나님의 영이 미국교회와 사회에 함께 하시기를, 하나님의 자녀들이 더 이상 해를 당하지 않도록 지키시기를, 공동체의 건강과 안전 보장을 위해 정의와 평화의 외침이 전 세계 방방곡곡에서 들려지기를 기도합니다. 우리는 인종차별로 인한 아픔이 치유되고 회복될 때까지 정의와 샬롬을 위해 계속 연대할 것입니다.

A Solidarity Message
Dear President Jim Winkler,
We greet you in the name of Jesus the Christ, our hope and our peace.
We send you our hearts and our prayers now as the U.S.A. reels in the wake of another Black man, George Floyd, who was killed by police while being restrained. We are familiar with the frustration and the anger that a people may feel toward institutions that treat people as if their lives are dispensable. We are also asking, do our lives matter? We echo the sentiments you have expressed in your statement, in lamenting that in the US, “racism and bias coupled with policing are a lethal combination for Black people.”
We reflect on the words of Martin Luther King, Jr, “These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear?”
Therefore, we not only send prayers to you, but we will stand with you in solidarity as together we seek to reform our institutions so that they may value and protect the lives and dignity of all the people within their care. We will continue to work until societies in both the U.S.A. and Republic of Korea hear the calls to end cultures that assume one ethnicity or “race” is more civil, more intelligent, more worthy of dignity than the other.
We also pray that God’s Spirit may be present with you and your community, watching over God’s children keeping them from further harm, inspiring their voices to cry out for justice and the shalom that ensures the health and well-being of the entire community. Let us continue working together for that justice and that shalom so that social disorder caused by racial injustice will be healed and reconciled.
