성찰: 팔레스타인의 코로나19
우리가 도전을 마주하는 방식은 우리가 문제를 극복할 가능성과 우리가 더 강한 개인이자 공동체로 나아갈 잠재력을 결정합니다. 코너스톤(Cornerstone) 이번 호에서 사빌은 많은 기고자들의 도움을 받아 인간의 본성에 대해 그리고 사람들이 중대한 문제에 직면했을 때 어떻게 반응하는지에 대해 성찰해보았습니다. 많은 학자들은 사람들이 문제에 직면했을 때 다음과 같은 단계를 거치면서 반응한다고 생각합니다. (a) 문제를 무시하거나 심지어 문제 자체를 부정 (b) 공포, 공황, 분노 (c) 문제와 타협하고 문제를 감수하며 살기 위해 노력 (d) 우울 (e) 문제를 수용하고 능동적으로 해결
사람들이 문제를 다루는 방식은 다양합니다. 어떤 사람들은 위 단계 중 하나의 단계에 더 많은 시간을 들이고, 어떤 사람들은 특정 단계에 갇혀 도움 없이는 앞으로 나아갈 수 없다고 느끼기도 합니다. 그러나 우리가 문제를 성공적으로 극복하기 위해서는 모든 단계를 효과적으로 다뤄야 합니다.
오늘날 팔레스타인에서 우리 민족이 직면하고 있는 문제는 많지만, 이 글을 작성하고 있는 지금 두드러진 문제는 두 가지입니다.
1. 코로나19 팬데믹과 팬데믹이 우리 삶에 미치는 파괴적인 영향
2. 팔레스타인-이스라엘 갈등의 정의로운 해결을 위한 어떠한 기회도 묵살하는 듯한 정치적 현실
슬프게도, 현재 세계의 많은 사람들은 이스라엘이 국제법을 따르기를 거부하고 있기 때문에, 유일한 해결책은 팔레스타인 사람들의 양보에 달려있다고 믿고 있습니다. 그것은 이스라엘 정부의 정치적 제안에 대한 완전한 양보를 의미합니다. 최근 정치적 변화는 정의로운 정치적 해결을 위한 우리 팔레스타인 사람들의 기회를 위협하고 있습니다.
이 성경연구를 준비하며 사빌은 팔레스타인과 이스라엘의 성서연구 촉진자 20명을 모아 온라인 모임을 시행했습니다. 사빌은 2015년부터 각기 다른 교구의 추천을 받은 성서연구 촉진자들을 훈련하고 있습니다. 훈련된 성서연구 촉진자들은 각 교회와 협력하여 각 공동체에 성경연구 그룹을 형성합니다. 오늘날까지, 사빌은 주로 여성들과 청소년, 청년 그룹을 섬기는 30개 이상의 활동적인 성서연구 그룹을 형성하는 데 도움을 주었습니다.
마태복음 26:31-56
최후의 만찬 후, 예수께서 체포되어 십자가형에 처해지게 될 것이라는 소식이 전해졌습니다. 작은 운동의 스승이자 지도자이셨던 예수께서는 당시 부패한 종교당국의 배신으로 로마 점령당국에 넘겨졌습니다. 공모자들은 예수를 제거함으로써 그 추종자들이 뿔뿔이 흩어지고 운동은 종식될 것이라고 믿었습니다.
이 이야기를 읽으며 우리는 제자들의 인간적인 반응을 돌아볼 수 있습니다.
문제 부정
제자들은 겟세마네 동산에서 잠들었습니다. 피곤했을 수도 있지만, 그들은 잠을 자며 문제를 무시하는 방법을 찾은 것일 수도 있습니다. 그들은 무법자 상태로 권력자들에게 쫓기고 있었습니다.
정치적 위기: 우리는 우리의 지도부와 정당, 그리고 옹호 단체들이 잠들어 있다고 느낍니다. 우리가 직면하고 있는 거대한 정치적 위협에 비하면, 조치는 거의 이뤄지고 있지 않습니다. 우리가 적대자들의 권력과 힘에 압도되고 있는 동안, 그들은 지상에서 현실을 창조하고 있습니다.
코로나19: 많은 사람들은 이 팬데믹이 야기하는 위협을 계속 무시하고 있습니다. 불행히도, 과학적 근거 없는 음모론과 오도된 정보가 현재 팔레스타인 사람들을 지배하고 있습니다.
공포, 공황, 분노
예수께서 체포되던 때, 한 제자가 칼을 빼들고 공격합니다. 예수께서는 상황을 완화시켰고, 제자들은 예수를 체포하러 온 무리의 힘과 권력을 깨달았습니다. 그리고 그들은 겁에 질려 달아났습니다. 예수에 대한 사랑과 충성을 타협할 수 없다고 주장했던 제자조차 "닭이 울기 전" 세 번이나 예수를 부인합니다.
정치적 위기: 사람들은 두려움과 분노에 직면했을 때 다르게 반응합니다. 어떤 사람들은 더 나은 삶을 추구하기 위해 이민을 생각하고, 또 어떤 사람들은 과격 단체에 가입하거나 심지어 개별 폭력 행동을 취하며 폭력을 사용합니다.
코로나19: 불행히도, 그리고 매우 걱정스럽게도, 팔레스타인 내 가정 폭력과 공동체 간 폭력이 증가하고 있습니다. 폭력에 가장 취약한 이들은 어린이와 여성입니다.
타협
중대한 도전에 직면했을 때 문제와 타협하고 문제를 감수하며 살아가는 것은 정상적입니다. 잠시 저항한 후, 제자들은 종교 기득권과 로마제국의 힘에 굴복했습니다. 예수께서는 스스로 십자가의 길을 걸어가셨습니다. 운동은 지도자를 잃었고, 그들은 뿔뿔이 흩어져 홀로 남았습니다.
정치적 위기: 많은 팔레스타인 사람들은 점령은 영원하고 우리가 진정한 변화를 만드는 어떠한 일도 할 수 없을 것이라고 생각합니다. 팔레스타인의 많은 사람들은 때때로 일자리 기회, 보건 치료를 받기 위한 군의 허가, 최소한의 물 보급 등을 얻기 위해 정의를 위한 요구에 대해 타협하려 합니다. 우리가 얼마나 타협할 의향이 있는지에 상관없이, 우리 삶의 질은 계속해서 악화되고 있습니다.
코로나19: 오랜 기간 동안 계속된 전면 봉쇄는 팬데믹을 종식시키는 데 실패했습니다. 사람들은 코로나19라는 슬픈 현실을 감수하며 살기 위해 노력하고 있습니다. 그러나 삶은 단순히 정상으로 돌아가지 않습니다. 치료법과 백신을 찾아 반드시 바이러스를 물리쳐야 한다는 것은 명백합니다.
우울
그리스도의 수난에 관한 본문에서 제자들의 침묵을 보면, 그들이 우울함에 굴복했다는 사실을 알 수 있습니다. 예수께서 십자가로 향하실 때 제자들은 자신들의 열망이 사라지는 것을 보며 충격에 빠졌습니다. 울며 통곡하고, 배신하고 부정하며, 비겁해지고 공포를 느끼며 제자들은 깊은 슬픔과 무력감, 절망과 무가치함을 느끼게 됩니다.
정치적 위기: 불행히도, 오늘날 팔레스타인에는 희망이 거의 없습니다. 우리 민족 중 많은 사람들은 무력감을 느끼고, 오랫동안 기대해온 정의를 실현할 분명한 길을 더 이상 보지 못합니다. 우리는 국제 사회, 아랍 세계, 그리고 가장 중요하게는 우리의 지도자들에 의해 실패를 겪고 있습니다.
코로나19: 여러 달 동안 팔레스타인은 세계 다른 나라들과 마찬가지로 코로나19와 싸웠습니다. 그러나 감염 사례는 계속 증가하고 있고 사망자 수는 수천 명에 이릅니다. 코로나19의 모든 영향과 불확실성은 우리가 알고 있는 것처럼 삶을 계속 변화시키고 있고, 사람들은 쉽게 우울함을 느끼고 있습니다.
수용
복음서는 제자들이 성령 강림 때 자신들의 감정과 행동을 통제할 수 있었다는 것을 우리에게 보여줍니다. 두려움과 비겁함과 혼란에 사로잡혔던 그 제자들은, 이제 예루살렘 거리에서 진리와 용기의 목소리가 되었습니다. 그들은 지도자의 십자가 죽음과 죽음의 의미를 받아들였을 뿐만 아니라, 운동을 지속시켜야 할 자신들의 책임을 이해하게 됐습니다. 사도행전과 초기 교회사를 보면 위험은 사라지지 않았다는 것을 알 수 있지만, 제자들은 예수께서 그러하셨듯이 진정한 해방의 대가는 고통과 박해로 덮여 있다는 것을 이해했습니다. 제자들은 자신들이 직면한 도전을 운동을 지속하게 하는 힘과 영감으로 성공적으로 바꿨습니다.
정치적 위기: 팔레스타인 사람들은 진정한 해방은 비폭력 저항을 통해서만 얻을 수 있다는 것을 받아들여야 합니다. 우리 민족의 권리에 대한 타협은 있어서는 안 되며, 우리는 꿋꿋이 서야 하고 정의로운 우리 하나님의 권능을 믿어야 합니다. 우리 팔레스타인은 일어서서 우리의 운명을 지배해야 합니다.
코로나19: 다른 많은 질병들과 마찬가지로, 코로나19도 의학 연구와 사회적 책임으로 극복되어야 합니다. 코로나19는 빠른 확산과 사망률뿐만 아니라 많은 사람들이 희망을 잃고 폭력에 의지하거나 우울함에 굴복하게 만든다는 점에서 위험합니다. 인간 본성의 선함에 초점을 맞추고 선행을 배가시킴으로써 우리는 바이러스 퇴치에 능동적으로 대처할 수 있습니다.
예수께서 기도를 통해 "아버지, 가능하다면 이 잔을 나에게서 거두어주소서"라고 간청한 것은 사실입니다. 십자가의 무게는 무거웠고 예수께서 깨달은 바는 이러했습니다. 예수께서는 죄를 짓지 않으셨고, 사역 기간 동안 그가 한 일은 억압받는 사람들과 주변부에 있는 사람들에게 좋은 소식을 가져다 주었을 뿐입니다. 예수께서는 피할 수 없는 일이 일어날 것임을 아셨습니다. 그 날 밤, 선한 사람들은 자고 있었기 때문에 악이 승리했을 것입니다.
육신이 되신 하나님이신 예수께서도 우울해지셨고, "지금 내 마음이 괴로워 죽을 지경"이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 복음서의 다른 어디에도 그가 제자들 중 누군가에게 마음이 괴롭다는 것을 이야기한 기록은 없습니다. 그런데 그 날 밤 그렇게 이야기하셨습니다. 예수께서는 제자들 앞에서 "영적으로 보기 좋은" 모습을 취하려고 하지 않으셨습니다. 그는 자신이 얼마나 괴로운지 제자들에게 솔직하게 보이셨습니다. 예수의 인간적 본성 속 연약함을 보여줄지도 모르는 이 본문은 중대한 도전에 직면한 우리 민족의 많은 사람들에게 큰 용기를 줍니다. 예수께서는 두려움과 공황, 실망, 심지어 우울의 의미를 아셨지만, 문제를 부정하거나 무시하지 않으셨습니다. 그리고 타협하려 하지도 않으셨습니다.

Reflections: COVID-19 in Palestine
The way we face our challenges determines the probability of overcoming our problems and the potential of coming out as stronger individuals and communities. In this edition of Cornerstone, Sabeel, with the help of a number of writers, reflects on human nature and how people react when they face a major problem. Many scholars believe that when facing problems humans react by going through phases: (a) ignoring the problem, or even denial of the problem (b) fear, panic, and anger (c) compromise with the problem, trying to live with it (d) depression (e) acceptance of the problem and dealing with it proactively.
It is true that people deal with any problem in different ways: some spend more time in one of the above phases than the others, some might get stuck in a certain phase and feel unable to move forward without help. But it is almost certain we must deal effectively with all phases to overcome the problem successfully.
Today in Palestine there are many problems that our people are facing, however two major problems stand out at the time of writing this Cornerstone:
1. The COVID-19 pandemic and its devastating effects on our lives.
2. A Political reality that seems to dismiss any chance for a just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Sadly, many in the world now believe that since Israel refuses to comply with international law, the only solution relies upon a concession of the Palestinian people: a total concession to the Israeli government’s political proposals. The political changes in this period of history threaten to diminish the chances of our Palestinian people for a just political solution.
In the preparation of this Bible study, Sabeel conducted an online gathering that brought together 20 different Bible study facilitators from both Palestine and Israel. Since 2015, Sabeel has been training Bible study facilitators that were nominated by their different parishes. The trained Bible study facilitators work with their respected churches to form Bible study groups in their respected communities. As of today, Sabeel has helped in forming over 30 active Bible study groups that serve mainly women, young adults and youth groups.
Matthew 26: 31-56
After finishing with the last supper, news was out that the decision was made that Jesus was going to be arrested and plans had been made to hand him over for crucifixion. Jesus, the teacher and leader of a small movement, was being betrayed by the corrupt religious authorities of that time and handed to the Roman occupation authorities. The conspirators believed that by eliminating Jesus his followers would be scattered and the movement would come to an end.
Reading the story, we can reflect on the human reaction of the disciples:
Denial of the Problem
The disciples slept in the garden of Gethsemane. It is possible they were tired, but also they found in sleep a way to ignore the problem that they were now outlaws and being chased by the people in power.
Political crisis: we feel that our leadership, political parties and advocacy bodies are asleep. Little action is being taken in comparison to the huge political threats we are facing. Our adversaries are creating realities on the ground while we are overwhelmed by their power and might.
COVID-19: Many people continue to ignore and deny the threat that this pandemic is causing. Unfortunately, conspiracy theories and misleading information that have no scientific basis currently dominate the Palestinian people.
Fear, Panic and Anger
The moment that Jesus is arrested, a disciple pulls out a sword and attacks. When Jesus diffuses the situation and the disciples realize the power and might of the mob that came to arrest Jesus, they run away in panic. Even the disciple who claimed that his love and loyalty to Jesus were nonnegotiable denies Jesus out of fear three times “before the cock crows.”
Political Crisis: People react differently when they face fear and anger. Some think of immigration as a way to pursue a better life while others use violence by joining a militant group or even reverting to individual acts that have a violent nature.
COVID-19: Unfortunately, and very worryingly, both domestic and inter-community violence is on the rise in Palestine. Both children and women are the most vulnerable to violence.
Compromise
It is normal when one faces a major challenge to compromise and find a way to live with the problem. After a few moments of resistance, the disciples surrendered to the might of the religious establishment and the Roman empire. Jesus was left to walk the way of the cross on his own; the movement had lost its leader and they were scattered and on their own.
Political Crisis: Many Palestinians feel that the occupation is eternal and nothing we can do will make a real change. Many people in Palestine try to compromise on their demands for justice, sometimes only to be granted job opportunities, a military permit to receive health treatment, a minimal ration of water, etc. Regardless of how much we are willing to compromise, our quality of life continues to deteriorate.
COVID-19: The long months of total lockdown have failed to put an end to the pandemic. The people have tried to live with the sad reality of COVID-19, but life does not simply go back to normal. It is evident that we must defeat the virus by finding a treatment and vaccination.
Depression
From the scripture readings related to the passion of Christ, one can conclude from the silence of the disciples that they have surrendered to depression. The disciples are in shock as they see their aspirations evaporating as Jesus heads to the cross. The weeping and wailing, the betrayals and denials, the cowardice and terror all contribute to the intense sadness and feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness of the disciples.
Political Crisis: Unfortunately, today in Palestine we find little hope. Many of our people feel helpless and no longer see a clear path that will deliver the long anticipated justice. We have been failed by the international community, by the Arab world and most importantly by our leaders.
COVID-19: For many months, Palestine, like the rest of the world, has combated COVID-19. However, the cases continue to be on the rise and the dead are in the thousands. All the effects and uncertainty of COVID-19 continue to change life as we know it and one can easily feel depressed.
Acceptance
The gospels indicate to us that the disciples were able to control their emotions and actions at Pentecost. The group of the same disciples who were occupied with fear, cowardice and confusion became the voices of truth and courage in the streets of Jerusalem. Not only had they accepted the implications of the crucifixion and death of their leader, they most importantly understood their responsibilities to keep the movement alive. The Book of Acts and early church history informs us that the dangers did not disappear, yet the disciples, like Jesus, understood that the cost of true liberation is paved with suffering and persecution. The disciples had managed successfully to transform the challenge they faced into power and inspiration to continue the movement.
Political Crisis: The Palestinian people must accept that true liberation will only be the fruit of nonviolent resistance. There must be no compromise on the rights of our people, we must remain steadfast and have faith in the power of our just God. We the Palestinians must rise up and take control of our destiny.
COVID-19: Like many other diseases, COVID-19 must be overcome with both medical research and social responsibility. The power of COVID-19 is not only its fast spreading and mortality rates, but its ability to make many people lose hope and resort to violence or surrender to depression. Focusing on the goodness in human nature and by multiplying good deeds, we can be proactive in defeating the virus.
It is true, Jesus himself pleaded through prayer, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me;” The weight of the cross was heavy and this is what Jesus realized. Jesus had done no sin, and his work during his ministry had brought only good news to the oppressed and people on the margins. Jesus understood the inevitable was going to happen: evil that night would come out victorious because the good people were sleeping.
Even Jesus, God in flesh, became depressed: “I am deeply grieved, even to death.” There is no record elsewhere in the gospels where he felt so bad that he told any of his disciples about it, but that’s what he did that night. Jesus did not try to put on a good “spiritual looking” front for them. He was honest with them about how bad he was feeling. This text, that might show a weakness in the human nature of Jesus, brings lots of courage to many of our people who are facing major challenges. Jesus understood the meaning of fear and panic, disappointment and even depression, yet Jesus never denied or ignored the problem, nor was he willing to compromise.
