세계교회협의회(WCC, 요안 사우카 총무대행)에서 故 서광선 목사님의 부음을 듣고 유가족과 한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK, 장만희 회장, 이홍정 총무)에 애도의 서신과 사진을 발송했습니다.
WCC는 애도의 서신에서 고인이 한국의 대표적 1세대 민중신학자 중 한 사람으로서 가난하고 억압받고 소외된 사람들의 인권을 증진시키기 위해 많은 노력을 기울인 데 대해 감사를 표했습니다. 아울러 NCCK의 88선언(‘민족의 통일과 평화에 대한 한국 기독교회 선언’)의 초안 작성자 중 한 사람으로서 한반도 평화와 통일에 기여한 공로와 NCCK의 평화를 위한 여정에 중대한 역할을 하신 것에도 깊은 감사를 표했습니다.
서신 전문은 아래와 같습니다.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is with great sadness that we have received the news of the demise of Rev. Prof. Dr David Kwang-sun Suh. On behalf of the World Council of Churches (WCC), I express my deep sorrow and prayers in support of both his bereaved family and the National Council of Churches in Korea.
We give thanks to his great efforts to promote the rights of the poor, oppressed, and marginalized, as one of the representatives of the first generation of Korean minjung theologians. As one of the drafters of the NCCK’s 88 Declaration, we also deeply appreciate his contribution to peace and reunification on the Korean Peninsula. We thank God for the life and witness of Rev. Prof. Dr David Kwang-sun Suh as he played a crucial role in the peace process of the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK).
May our common Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of life and resurrection, give rest to his faithful and beloved servant Rev. Prof. Dr David Kwang-sun Suh.
May God also grant us grace, that in pain we may find comfort, in sorrow hope, in death resurrection.

그리스도 안의 형제 자매 여러분,
서광선 목사님이 별세하셨다는 소식을 듣게 되어 매우 슬픕니다. 세계교회협의회(WCC)를 대표해서 깊은 애도를 표하며 슬픔을 당한 유가족과 한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK)를 위해 기도합니다.
우리는 고인이 한국의 대표적인 1세대 민중신학자 중 한 분으로서 가난하고 억압받고 소외된 사람들의 권리 증진을 위해 많은 노력을 기울이신 것에 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 아울러 한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK)의 88선언 초안 작성자 중 한 분으로서 한반도 평화와 통일에 기여한 고인의 공로에 깊이 감사드립니다. 우리는 한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK)의 평화를 위한 여정에 중대한 역할을 한 고인의 삶과 증언으로 인해 하나님께 감사합니다.
