세계교회협의회(World Council of Churches, 이하 WCC) 제리 필레이 총무는 나아지리아 아부자에서 WCC 실행위원회가 진행되는 분주한 기간 동안에도 본회 72회 총회를 축하하며 메시지와 영상을 통해 인사말을 전해왔습니다.
필레이 총무는 코로나19 팬데믹 이후 사회적 양극화와 분열의 심화 속에서 창조세계가 직면한 실존적 도전 앞에 모든 그리스도인들과 선한 의지를 가진 세계 시민들과 청년세대가 살아갈 미래에 대한 정의와 공동의 책임의 관점에서 긴급히 대응하도록 부름 받았음을 강조하였습니다. 더불어 다가오는 본 회 100주년을 맞아 NCCK의 지나온 역사에 존경과 경의를 표하며 한반도 화해와 평화, 통일을 위한 에큐메니칼 연대를 지속적으로 이끌어 갈 것을 다짐하며 내년 9월 서울에서 개최될 NCCK 100주년 국제 심포지움에서 반갑게 만날 것을 기약하였습니다. 축사 전문(국문/영문)은 아래와 같습니다.

72회 NCCK 총회 인사말1. 세계교회협의회(WCC) 제리 필레이 총무
한국기독교교회협의회 총회에 참석하신 모든 그리스도의 자매, 형제 된 여러분, 세계교회협의회 실행위원회가 열리고 있는 지금 나이지리아 아부자에서 인사말을 전하게 되어 보다 영광으로 생각합니다.
먼저 김종생 목사님께서 최근 NCCK 총무로 선출되신 것을 축하드리며, 저는 김종생 총무님께서 이끄시는 첫 번째 72회기 총회의 모든 과정에 WCC 총무로서 깊은 연대와 지지를 보냅니다.
이번 72회 총회 주제인 "생명의 하나님, 사랑으로 만물을 새롭게 하소서"는 매우 심오하면서도 시의적절한 주제입니다. 우리 모두가 이미 주지하고 있다시피, 우리는 갈등의 확산, 핵전쟁의 위협, 사회적 양극화와 분열의 심화, 경제적 불평등의 심화, 코로나19 팬데믹의 지속적인 영향과 지구 마을의 생물다양성 손실의 가속화 등 여러 위기가 복합적으로 작용하는 시대에 살고 있으며, 이 모든 사회적 변화는 이미 우리에게 들이닥친 지구적 기후 위기사태로 인해 더욱 악화되고 있습니다.
하나님께서 창조하신 모든 피조세계를 위해 계획하신 풍요로운 삶과, 지구마을의 미래가 전례 없는 실존적 도전에 의해 위태로워지고 있습니다. 모든 그리스도인은 선한 의지를 가진 세계시민들과 함께 우리의 청년세대가 살아갈 미래에 대한 정의와 공동의 책임의 관점에서 이와 같은 위기에 긴급히 대응하도록 부름 받았음을 이 시간 다시한번 기억합니다.
오늘 개최된 총회는 다가오는 NCCK 창립 100주년을 열어가는 첫 번째 발걸음이 될 것이라 기대합니다. 실제로 NCCK는 지난 오랜 시간 동안 군부독재와 군사주의에 저항하며 평화와 창조세계에 대한 돌봄, 무엇보다 모두를 위한 존엄과 인권을 위한 에큐메니칼 운동의 역사와 전통의 위대한 유산을 가지고 있다는 것을 세계 교회는 이미 인지하고 있습니다. 이와 같은 역사적 유산은 세계 에큐메니칼 운동에 큰 영감이 되고 있으며 지금 우리가 마주한 여러 가지 도전을 극복하는데 유의미한 자원으로 남아 있습니다.
올해 NCCK 총회의 주제는 특히 가속화되는 기후위기 앞에 그리스도인으로서 어떻게 대응할 것인가에 초점을 맞추고 있다고 생각합니다. 파괴되어 가고 있는 하나님의 창조세계에 대한 파국적 인류에 대한 성찰과 청지기적 책임은 기후위기와 지역사회 간 문제 그리고 생태계 전반에 있어 보다 선명해 지고 있습니다. 기후 과학자들의 냉정한 평가는 바로 이와 같은 책무를 우리에게 동일하게 요구하고 있습니다.
이와 같은 위기의 심각성과 시급성 앞에서 부재된 세계 정치와 리더쉽은 오늘 우리 그리스도인들에게 다음과 같이 기도할 것을 계속해서 촉구하고 있습니다. "생명의 하나님, 사랑으로 만물을 새롭게 하소서"
본 총회의 주제는 지난 9월 칼스루에에서 열린 WCC 11차 총회의 주제 “그리스도의 사랑이 우리를 화해와 일치로 이끄신다”와 동일한 초점을 이루며 “살아있는 지구”에 관해 채택된 성명서에 명시된 기후 변화와 환경문제에 관한 WCC가 지향하는 가치와 매우 밀접하게 연결되어 있다고 생각합니다. 우리는 갈등과 분열, 분의와 기후 위기의 시대에 그리스도이 사랑이 화해와 일치, 정의와 회복을 위한 변혁의 힘이라는 점을 다시한번 확언하며 그 길을 여러분과 함께 계속해서 걸어나가고자 합니다.
2024년은 NCCK 창립 100주년과 더불어 한반도 화해와 평화, 통일을 위한 에큐메니칼 연대의 역사에서 중추적인 사건에 해당하는 도잔소 회담의 40주년이 되는 해이기도 합니다. 현재 한반도 대결과 긴장이 다시 고조되고 있음에도 불구하고 또한 이와 같은 이유로 WCC는 보다 깊이 한반도 평화를 위해 헌신해 나갈 것이며, 분단된 한반도의 참된 평화와 통일을 위해 남과 북의 지도자들을 지지하고 있습니다. 도잔소 회담 40년을 맞이하는 2024년 우리는 도잔소가 우리에게 전하는 국제 연대의 정신을 되새기며 현재 한반도의 교착 상태를 타개하고 해당 지역에서 반복되는 긴장의 고조 그리고 여기에 수반되는 핵 분쟁의 위협을 종식시켜 나가는데 계속해서 협력해나가야 할 것입니다.
따라서 우리는 2019년 북미 하노이 정상회담 결렬 그리고 2020년 전 세계적인 코로나19 팬데믹 출현 이후 단절되어 온 조선그리스도교연맹(KCF)의 자매형제들과 다가오는 2024년 이 상징적인 기념의 해에 다시 뜻깊게 만날 수 있기를 기도하고 있습니다. 고조되는 대결구도와 단절의 시기에도 WCC는 ‘한반도 종전평화 캠페인(Korea Peace Appeal)’을 지지해왔으며 앞으로도 평화 협정의 그날까지 계속해서 지지할 것입니다.
무엇보다 2024년 ‘한반도 평화와 통일을 위한 에큐메니칼 포럼(EFK)’을 통해 세계교회협의회와 한국기독교교회협의회와 그리고 조선그리스도교연맹이 공동으로 에큐메니칼 만남을 주최할 수 있기를 마음 깊이 소망하고 있습니다. 하나님의 뜻이 계시다면 WCC는 한국교회를 더불어 EFK 대표단의 방북을 이끌 수 있는 기회가 있기를 간절히 기도하고 있습니다.
한반도 내에서 NCCK가 수행하고 있는 정의와 인권 민주주의에 대한 역사적 증언과 활약은 계속되고 있다는 것을 우리는 알고 있습니다, 우리가 추구하는 가치에 대한 새로운 도전이 제기되는 상황에서도 우리는 계속해서 서로 연대의 마음을 나누고 있습니다. WCC는 우리가 마주한 산적한 과제와 도전들 앞에 NCCK와 함께 계속 기도하며 활동해 나갈 것입니다.
WCC와 NCCK간 국제적 연대와 우정을 담은 파트너쉽을 다시한번 기억하고 확언하는 과정에서, 저를 비롯한 WCC 공동체는 2024년 9월, NCCK 100주년 국제 심포지움에 적극 참여할 것이며 이를 매우 매우 영광으로 생각하고 있습니다.
우리가 다시 만나게 될 때까지 자비하신 구주 예수 그리스도의 사랑과 평화가 여러분과 함께 하시고 주께서 여러분을 은총의 길로 인도하시며 큰 힘주시기를 간절히 기도드립니다. 감사합니다.

Message from WCC General Secretary

Sisters and Brothers in Christ, participants in the General Assembly of the National Council of Churches in Korea, I am honoured to present this greeting from Abuja, Nigeria – where the Executive Committee of the World Council of Churches has been meeting.
I start by offering my congratulations to Rev. Kim Jong-seng on his recent appointment to the office of NCCK General Secretary, and my solidarity and support as he leads this Assembly for the first time in this capacity.
The theme chosen for your Assembly – “God of Life, Restore the Creation by your Love” – is profound and timely. As we are all acutely aware, we live in a time of converging crises of proliferating conflicts, renewed risks of nuclear war, growing social polarization and division, spiralling economic inequality, the persistent impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and accelerating loss of the Earth’s biodiversity, all compounded by the global climate emergency that is already upon us. The life in abundance envisaged by God for all God’s people, and indeed the very future of the living planet created by God, are imperilled by this unprecedented constellation of existential challenges. All Christians, together with all people of good will are called urgently to respond to these threats, from the perspective of justice and shared responsibility for the future of our children and all future generations.
Your Assembly anticipates and looks forward to the NCCK’s centenary next year. Indeed, over its long history, NCCK has a distinguished heritage of ecumenical witness and action against dictatorship and militarism, for peace, for care for creation, and for human rights for all. That heritage remains an inspiration for the wider global ecumenical movement, and a resource upon which to draw for the challenges ahead.
General SecretariatThe theme of your Assembly this year especially focuses our minds on how we as Christians respond to the ccelerating climate crisis. Humanity’s catastrophic stewardship of God’s unique intricate creation, the increasingly obvious impacts on our climate, communities and ecosystems, and the sobering assessments of climate scientists, demand this focus from all of us. The evident inadequacy of political will and of human leadership to address the gravity and urgency of this crisis impels us to pray: “God of life, restore the creation by your love”.
The elements of this prayer closely reflect the focuses of the WCC’s 11th Assembly in September 2022, held under the theme “Christ’s love moves the world to reconciliation and unity”, and the strong priority given to climate change and environmental concerns, expressed in the Assembly Statement on “The Living Planet: Seeking a Just and Sustainable Global Community”. In this time of conflict, division, injustice and environmental crisis, I join you in affirming that the love of Christ is the transformative force for reconciliation, unity, justice and restoration.
In addition to the NCCK’s centenary, 2024 will also mark the 40th anniversary of the Tozanso consultation, the pivotal event in the history of ecumenical efforts for peace, reconciliation and reunification on the Korean Peninsula. Despite – or because of – the current re-escalation of confrontation and tensions in the region, the WCC remains deeply committed to that vision, and to supporting inter-Korean leadership for peace and reunification of the divided Korean people. As we approach this 40th anniversary year, we must recall and re-capture the spirit of Tozanso to help break through the current deadlock on the Korean Peninsula, and bring an end to the cyclical escalations of tensions and the concomitant risks of nuclear conflict in the region.
In this regard, we pray that it will become possible during this emblematic anniversary year to re-engage with our sisters and brothers in the Korean Christian Federation (KCF), from whom we have been separated since the collapse of the Hanoi Summit between the DPRK and the USA in 2019 and the emergence of the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Even during this period of separation and renewed confrontation, WCC has supported – and will continue to promote – the ‘Korean Peace Appeal’ campaign. And I very much hope that next year, an ecumenical gathering can be organized by the WCC jointly with NCCK and KCF, under the auspices of the Ecumenical Forum for Peace, eunification and Development on the Korean Peninsula (EFK). God willing, I also look forward to an opportunity to lead an ecumenical delegation visit to the DPRK next year.
Within South Korea itself, NCCK continues its historic witness for justice, human rights and democracy, in circumstances that present fresh challenges to those values. WCC will continue to pray and act together with NCCK in confronting these challenges. In a reaffirmation of our partnership, WCC will be honoured to take part in the NCCK’s 100th anniversary gathering in September 2024.
In the meantime, may the love and peace of our compassionate Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ be upon you, and continue to guide and empower you.
