한국기독교교회협의회는 조선그리스도교연맹과 함께 2004 평화통일 남북공동기도주일 공동기도문을 합의하였습니다. 이 공동기도주일은 한반도의 평화를 위해 남과 북의 교회가 함께 기도하자는 취지로 1989년부터 지켜오고 있습니다. 또한 1989년 세계교회협의회 중앙위원회는 8월15일 직전 주일을 한반도 평화와 통일을 위한 기도주일로 지켜줄 것을 세계교회와 에큐메니칼 기관들에 요청하는 결의를 하였습니다.
8월15일은 우리민족이 일제로부터 해방의 날인 동시에 우리 현대사에서 아직 해결되지 못한 남과 북의 분단이 시작된 날이기도 합니다. 이러한 수난의 민족사를 새로운 창조와 평화의 출발점으로 삼자는 남 ·북교회의 신앙의 결단이 담겨있는 이 기도문을 통하여 우리민족 구성원 모두가 평화와 통일을 위해 함께 마음을 모을 수 있기를 바랍니다.

존귀하신 하나님,
모든 만물을 사랑으로 품어주시어
굽은 것을 바르게, 애통함을 기쁨으로
변화시켜 주시니 감사합니다.
8월15일을 다시 맞았습니다.
60여 년 전 일제로부터 해방되던 날,
민족의 의지와 관계없이
외세는 이 땅에 분단의 뼈아픈 역사를 가져왔습니다.
주님,
우리를 용서하여 주옵소서.
해방의 기쁨과 분단의 아픔을 동시에 경험한 민족,
이 아프고도 혼란스러운 상황이
우리민족에 따라 붙는 꼬리말이 되었는데도
평화와 통일의 과업을 성취해야할 우리 그리스도인조차
세월의 요동에 휘말려 지난 예순 해를 살았습니다.
그러나 주님,
당신의 크고 놀라우신 사랑을 우리는 알고 있습니다.
분단의 십자가를 진 서러운 민족에게
희망의 빛으로 주신 6 15 공동선언은
우리에게 놀라운 변화를 가져다주었습니다.
분단의 장벽이 여전히 이 땅을 갈라놓고 있지만
남과 북의 형제자매들은
장벽을 넘나들며 서로에 대한 신뢰를 넓혀가고 있습니다.
일상의 바쁨으로 지쳐도
장벽 너머에 사는 동포를 위해 늘 기도하게 되었습니다.
주님,
여기서 멈추지 않고 분단 60년의 굽은 역사를 바로 펴서
평화를 이루고,
통일을 이루어,
마침내 민족의 새로운 역사를 이루기를 간절히 바랍니다.
이 일을 위하여 우리 그리스도인들이 앞장서게 하옵소서.
머지않아 이루어질 이 땅의 평화와 민족의 통일을
간절히 바라며 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘.

2004 Common Prayer for Peace and Reunification
of the Korean Peninsula
Almighty God,
you nurture your entire creation with love;
you make the crooked way straight,
and transform sorrow to joy.
We thank you.
Once again we celebrate August 15th.
On this day sixty years ago we were liberated from japan.
But, without any reference to the will of our people,
outside forces divided our land,
and we have carried this painful history of division until today.
God, forgive us.
We experienced the joy of liberation and the sorrow of division.
The painful and confusing history has been a heavy burden for the entire nation.
But we Christians,
who bear the responsibility to work for the peace and reunification of our land,
have simply floating through time over these past sixty years.
God, we know your great and astounding love.
To our people who have carried the sorrowful cross of division,
you gave the light of hope with the June 15 South-North Agreement
which brought amazing change to our people.
Though the wall of division still separates us,
brothers and sisters in South and North
are crossing the barrier and deepening our mutual trust.
Even in the weariness of our busy daily lives
We now always pray for our sisters and brothers on the other side.
God,
we fervently pray that the change not end here,
that the distorted history of sixty years of division may be made straight,
peace may reign,
reunification may be attained,
and finally our people's new history may begin.
Let us Christians take the lead in this work.
Ardently trusting that peace an reunification of this land is near,
